Eagerly awaited Takuma E foil

We’ll soon have our hands on the UK’s first Takuma Efoil – here are some details

An e-foil is a board with a hydrofoil and an electric motor, which allows you to fly over the water and experience new gliding sensations. Until now, this market was dominated by a Puerto Rican manufacturer, Lift Foils, and an Australian brand, Flite, with boards sold for around 10,000 euros. A young company from Lille, Takuma, specialising in leisure hydrofoils, has been offering its own e-foil for the general public for a few days, at a more affordable price of 5999 Pounds. “It took us two years of R & D to develop a cheaper and easier to use board,” says Cyril Coste, a sliding sports enthusiast who co-founded Takuma with Thomas Bevilacqua and Nicolas Guittard. We have worked a lot on the hydrodynamics of the foil: ours allows to fly with a smaller engine and therefore a less bulky battery. The design of the cooling system – by water or by air – of the battery and the computer which makes it possible, via a remote control, to manage the speed of the machine should be the subject of a patent application.

Mass production

“Another difference compared to our competitors who still make a lot of parts using 3D printers, we invested in moulds to produce mass and therefore cheaper,” adds Thomas Bevilacqua. This graduate of Grenoble School of Management, passed by Decathlon, first created a communication agency, Ores, in 2013 with a childhood friend, Nicolas Guittard. This is where the duo met Cyril Coste, in 2014: he had created a company, Lokahi, specialized in stand-up paddles and surfs, became a customer of Ores.

The entire electrical part of Takuma e-foils is made in Taiwan, while the production of the board part is provided in France and Formosa. The targeted customers are the individuals but also the hirers, installed along the beaches or nautical bases.
